Exploring the Historical and Contemporary Experiences and Perspectives of the Canadian Jewish CommunityThe latest version of the grade six Ontario Social Studies curriculum provides opportunities for students to learn about the responses of the Canadian government to the Holocaust and the development of Canada’s responses to acts of hate and human rights violations. So, what does this mean for our Catholic students who will be engaging in learning with this curriculum? How will this learning help our students develop a more personal relationship with God and the teachings of Jesus Christ? How will a curriculum that examines how settler/newcomer communities, such as the Jewish community have contributed to the development of identities in Canada, help them live a life that is guided by the Gospel? The lessons provided in this document are intended to provide classroom teachers with opportunities to approach the new grade six Social Studies curriculum from a perspective that is distinctly Catholic. These lessons should not be seen as an end point to the new Social Studies curriculum. Rather, our hope is that they are viewed as launching off points for classroom engagements that will be rich, relevant and engaging for students. Most importantly, we hope they serve to further support a better understanding of what it means to a Catholic in Canada.
